“PASSING THROUGH THE VALLEY OF BACA”
Healing for the Hurting in the Balm of Gilear

Psalm 84:5-7 (NKJV) “Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, Whose heart is set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baca, They make it a spring; The rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength.”

Everyone faces hard times. However, instead of drying up or becoming bitter, we should seek to use hard times as opportunities for growth, even refreshment. Have you ever gone through the Valley of Baca? Your response might be, “Where is the Valley of Baca?” It is not a physical place but rather a description of an emotional plateau in our lives. It is a place of tears, a valley of sorrow and weeping – it is the “pits” – a garbage dump.

The song says, “Tears Are a Language God Understands.” It is a good thing He does understand. Tears become an expression or an outlet for us. Crying can be perceived as a weakness, but God created us with these emotions. He cares about our tears! Psalm 56:8, “…put thou my tears into thy bottle…”

In Bible times, the worshippers often had to go through dry and barren conditions to get to Jerusalem. As they travelled, they went through many a dry and sandy valley, in which they were to perish for thirst, but they would dig little pits to receive and keep the rain-water for themselves and others for their refreshment. Just as these pits might become wells, fountains, or pools, supplied by refreshing rain, so the grace of God, by the exercises of His worship, refreshes and revives the hearts of His people. In the place of sorrows, they have “rivers of delight” as the pilgrims daily replenished their bodily strength till they reached Jerusalem. In the same way a spiritual worshipper is daily supplied with spiritual strength by God’s grace till he appears before God in heaven.

Any man, not only the priest or Levite, is blessed of God when his heart is in tune with God. A humble person will acknowledge his need for continual growth and he will never develop an unteachable spirit. When we reject God’s way, the blessing and guidance of His spirit may be withdrawn, leaving us in spiritual drought.

However, as you pass through the valley of weeping making it a well of tears, your heart will be renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. You do not need to fear when you go through those barren and dry places in your life. Those who weep and seek God will be refreshed rain and pools of spiritual water. Isaiah 43:1-3, “…Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…”

As the refreshing rain of God’s grace is poured over your soul, it transforms the sorrows of your life into “rivers of delight.” When the rain comes, it gives new life to sprouting plants and strength to men. Men who pray before God go from strength to strength.
