Special Sunday Night Service
You're invitedLIKE MANY OTHER CHRISTIANS, I am deeply concerned about the spiritual
conditions in the church. A number of congregations, for example, lack a
healthy emphasis on the ministry of the Holy Spirit, and their practices in
worship show an absence of spiritual illumination by the Word of God and
the Holy Spirit.
An urgent need is to recognize that the Spirit’s presence, operations, and gifts in worship are not merely a matter of our feelings, enthusiasm, and fervency. What appears to be the activity and manifestations of the Holy Spirit can proceed from a human or demonic source. The flesh seeks to exalt self rather than seeking the spiritual welfare of the body of Christ. It is quite possible that we have as much trouble and perhaps more with the flesh in manifestations in worship than we do with evil spirits. However, Jesus does warn us against evil spirits and against being deceived by signs and wonders which will appear in the last days to lead Christians astray (Matt. 24:24). The Bible states that even such signs as casting out demons, prophesying, and other mighty works do not guarantee that they are of God (7:21-23).
Some believers might think that raising any question about spiritual discernment is to quench the Spirit. The feeling in some churches may be that since we have so few spiritual manifestations, an emphasis on spiritual discernment has the potential of reducing what we have. The thinking is that the church should accept any genuine operation of the Spirit with joy and gratitude and take care not to quench the Spirit.
While we need to pray for and expect extraordinary manifestations of God’s Spirit and His presence in worship, we must also take seriously the admonition to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1 NIV). God gives us the ability and the responsibility to discern whether spiritual manifestations are from Him or not. Few gifts are of more critical importance to Pentecostals today than the gift of spiritual discernment, but we need to understand discernment in the broad aspects of the term. (Taken from the Evangel)
